Building Shopping Systems to Help Local Shops

As soon as we heard the words “Lockdown”, we knew there was something we could do to help with the situation that would develop locally. Over the past couple of years we have been building and learning about marketplaces. This has included our first marketplace for Dorset which has been gathering momentum over the year.

With a surge in panic buying meaning food shortages in Supermarkets, We are Chain became concerned for the local shops that we love. In particular those near to our office like the Fishmongers in Tisbury. What happens to people who can't get out to shop and want to support their local shops? So we dived straight into the problem and started a new marketplace called Local Shops 2 U. Here, shops can add their own products to their own log in. The website takes a 5% commission from each sale and we gather the goods together for delivery.

Local Shop Success

We have now got 6 local shops on the website including a wine shop, fish shop, vegetable box shop and more. Orders are building up and we believe we may have prevented at least a few people from going to the shop and therefore done a little bit to stop the spread of the virus. We have since split this system out for the local community to use as an ordering system for those in need of food who have to self isolate and don't have any money.

Working with the volunteers from the Tisbury Neighbourhood group has been a pleasure and we stay in touch via Slack to see if there is anything we can help with.
