Building a Menu in Shopify

Are you new to the world of e-commerce and just starting out with Shopify? One of the key elements of your online store’s navigation is its menu. A well-organized menu not only enhances user experience but also plays a crucial role in SEO optimization. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the steps to build a menu in Shopify using navigation settings, add policies, create a top bar menu, and leverage the tag system to include collections and products. Let’s get started!

Understanding Navigation Settings

First things first, let’s navigate to the Navigation settings in your Shopify dashboard. Here’s how:

1. Log in to your Shopify admin dashboard.

2. Go to Online Store > Navigation.

Leveraging Tags for Collections and Products

Tags are a powerful tool in Shopify that allow you to organize and filter your products and collections. Here’s how you can use them to enhance your menu:

1. Tag your collections and products: In your Shopify admin, navigate to Products or Collections. Edit each item and add relevant tags (e.g., “New Arrivals”, “Sale”, “Best Sellers”).

2. Create menu items using tags: In the Navigation settings, click on Add menu item. Choose the type of link as “Collection” or “Product”. Instead of selecting a specific collection or product, enter the tag name preceded by a colon (e.g., “:New Arrivals”).

3. Save your menu: Once you’ve added all the desired menu items, click on Save menu to apply the changes.

Adding Policies to Your Menu

Before diving into the main menu structure, it’s important to include essential pages such as shipping policy, return policy, and privacy policy. Here’s how to add them:

1. In the Navigation settings, click on Add menu.

2. Name your menu (e.g., “Policies”).

3. Click on Add menu item.

4. Choose the type of link (page, collection, product, or web address).

5. Select the respective policy page from the dropdown or enter the URL.

6. Repeat the process for each policy.

Creating a Top Bar Menu

A top bar menu is a great way to highlight important information or promotions. Depending on your theme, it may or may not be possible but it is an excellent way to send out sales messages. Here’s how you can add one:

1. In the Navigation settings, click on Add menu.

2. Name your menu (e.g., “Top Bar”).

3. Click on Add menu item.

4. Choose the type of link (page, collection, product, or web address).

5. Enter the URL or select the page/collection/product from the dropdown.

Repeat the process for each item you want to include in the top bar.
