In some instance, you may want to alter the standard text that comes with your Shopify store. This might be because it works better with what you sell or because you want to add some brand humor to proceedings.
Whatever your reason there is a way to do most things in Shopify and changing text is one that is fairly easy. You can alter the text on the Add to Cart button or you may want to personalise the email that is sent when your customer buys something.
Most of this text is generic and you could spend a lot of time altering it and yes, it might be worth it to create a seamless customer experience.
In previous versions of Shopify, you just navigated to languages in the theme files and did it from there. With Shopify 2.0 it has changed name and location.
How to edit default theme content in Shopify
- Open the back end of your Shopify store.
- Navigate to the Online Store
- Click Themes
- Click the three dots next to Customize button
- Select “Edit Default Theme Code”

In this section, you can see there are a lot of options and you can change anything. So please be careful you may spend a lot of time trying to fix any accidental errors.
There is a search bar at the top that lets you find your target text quickly and easily. Type in Add to Cart and you will see the result. Simply change the text to what you require and then click save on the top right-hand side.
