How to Find the Collaborator Request Code in Your Shopify Store

    By Rupert• September 18, 2025

This video shows you how to find and share your store collaborator code in Shopify's dashboard. This is useful when you want to work with a Shopify Partner Agency like us. We can then access the back end of your Shopify store and support you in your e-commerce journey. It also means you don't have to use up another user profile which can be expensive.

As the store owner, you can set permissions and restrictions so partners can only see relevant information. There is no need to share your order book or customer's details if you don't want to.

Giving an agency, developer, or Shopify Partner access to your store doesn’t mean you need to hand over your login details. Instead, Shopify provides a Collaborator Request Code — a secure four-digit code that lets trusted partners request access safely.

In this guide, we’ll explain what the Shopify collaborator code is, why it’s important, and how you can find, share, and regenerate it.

What Is a Shopify Collaborator Request Code?

A Shopify collaborator code is a unique four-digit number linked to your store. Agencies and developers use this code when requesting access through their Shopify Partner Dashboard.
This system ensures that only trusted partners who know your code can request entry, helping store owners keep control of their account.
    Key points about collaborator codes:
    • It’s required for any Shopify Partner to request access
    • Store owners decide which permissions are granted, such as themes, products, orders, or settings
    • It improves security compared to simply creating a staff account
    • Codes can be regenerated instantly, invalidating old ones

Why Use a Collaborator Code Instead of Adding a Staff Member?

Many Shopify merchants ask: “Why not just add someone as a staff user?” Here’s why the collaborator code method is safer and smarter.
    • You never share your personal login details, keeping security first
    • Partners only get the permissions you approve, giving you full control
    • Collaborator accounts don’t count towards your staff limit, so there’s no extra cost
    • Access can be revoked or changed at any time, making management simple
For ongoing support, agencies like We Are Chain typically use this system to work securely on client stores.

Step by Step: How to Find the Shopify Collaborator Code

Finding your Shopify collaborator request code is simple.
Log in to your Shopify admin
Click Settings in the bottom left corner
    Select Users
    Scroll to the Security section
Your four-digit collaborator code will be displayed here
Copy this code and send it securely to your Shopify Partner or agency. They’ll use it to submit a collaborator request.

How to Approve a Collaborator Request

Once your agency or developer sends a request, you’ll see it appear in your Shopify admin.
Go to Settings → Users and Permissions (you should also receive an email requesting access from the partner)
Review the request and check what permissions are being asked for
Approve or decline access as you see fit
💡 Tip: Always grant the minimum level of access required for the project. For example, if a partner is only helping with SEO, they don’t need access to orders or payments.

How to Change or Regenerate the Collaborator Code

If your collaborator code is compromised or you want extra security, you can regenerate it.
Head back to Settings → Users and Permissions → Security
    Click Regenerate Code
Shopify will instantly create a new four-digit code
The old code becomes invalid, so only people with the new code can request access.
