If I Were in Your Shoes, I'd Switch from PrestaShop to Shopify. Here's Why.

    By Rupert• February 26, 2026

If you’re currently running your store on PrestaShop, chances are it has been in place for some time.

    It functions.
You have invested time and budget into it.
It may even be heavily customised.

And changing platforms feels like a significant decision.

    Understandably so.

However, if I were reviewing the direction of ecommerce today and thinking about efficiency, growth and long term sustainability, I would seriously consider moving to Shopify. Shopify offers a robust platform that can transform your online business.

    Here is why.

1️⃣ You Shouldn’t Need Technical Support for Routine Changes

One of the most common challenges with PrestaShop is complexity.

Adding functionality, managing modules, handling updates and resolving compatibility issues often require developer involvement.

    That means

    Additional cost
    Delays in implementation
    Greater operational dependency

Shopify removes much of that burden.

    Hosting is included
    Security is managed
    Updates are automatic
    Infrastructure scales with you

If you are growing a business, your attention should be on performance, marketing and customer experience, not system maintenance.

2️⃣ Agility Matters More Than Deep Customisation

PrestaShop offers flexibility. For technically led teams, that can be appealing.

However, flexibility can quickly become complexity.

    Shopify is designed for

    Faster launches
    Easier iteration
    Cleaner integrations
    International expansion without major rebuilds

In a competitive ecommerce environment, the businesses that succeed are often those that move quickly and adapt confidently.

3️⃣ The True Cost Is Often Higher Than It First Appears

On paper, PrestaShop can appear cost effective.

In practice, the total cost often includes

    Hosting
    Security oversight
    Paid modules
    Developer retainers
    Upgrade projects
    Emergency fixes

Shopify’s subscription model can appear more expensive at first glance, but it provides predictability.

For many brands, the total cost of ownership becomes clearer and often more manageable over time.

4️⃣ The Ecosystem Is Built for Growth

Shopify has evolved well beyond being a simple shopping cart.

It now operates as a complete commerce platform, supporting

    Subscriptions
    B2B
    POS
    International selling
    Advanced analytics
    High performance checkout

When scaling further, Shopify Plus allows businesses to grow without replatforming again.

That continuity reduces long term risk.

    5️⃣ Simplicity Creates Capacity

This is perhaps the most overlooked factor.

As business owners ourselves, we have seen how operational complexity quietly absorbs time and energy.

If your platform constantly requires attention, it limits strategic thinking.

Shopify’s value is not just technical. It is mental clarity.

The simpler the system, the more capacity you have to focus on growth.

    An Honest Perspective

    PrestaShop is not inherently problematic.

For businesses with strong in house technical capability, it can work effectively.

    However, if you

    Want fewer technical dependencies
    Prefer predictable costs
    Are focused on scaling
    Value operational simplicity

Then moving to Shopify is a logical next step.

    Final Thought

Replatforming is not about abandoning what you have built.

It is about choosing the infrastructure that supports your next phase of growth.

If I were making the decision today, I would prioritise agility, stability and scalability.

For many ecommerce brands, that points firmly towards Shopify.

If you are weighing up the move and would value a straightforward commercial discussion, I am always happy to connect.

The right platform should support growth, not complicate it.
