Slow Store, Lost Sales: Speed Up Your Shopify Site Before Christmas

    By Rupert• October 6, 2026

Picture it. A shopper taps your Instagram ad on their lunch break. Your page takes an age to load. They're gone before your hero image appears.

At Christmas that happens thousands of times a day, across every store. The fast ones get the sale. The slow ones never even know they lost it.

The good news? Most Shopify speed problems come from a handful of things you can fix yourself.

    Shrink your images

This is the big one. A photo straight off a camera or phone can be several megabytes. Your hero banner doesn't need to be.

Resize images to the size they're actually shown, and save them as WebP or well-compressed JPEGs. Shopify serves images in modern formats automatically, but it can't fix a huge original.

Clear out apps you don't use

Every app you've ever tried may have left code behind in your theme. Go through your apps list and remove anything you're not actively using.

Then check your theme for leftover snippets. If you're not sure what's safe to remove, that's a job for your developer, or for us.

Go easy on videos and sliders

Auto-playing background videos and five-slide carousels look lovely in a design meeting. On a phone with two bars of signal, they're a pain. One strong image and one clear message usually sells better anyway.

Check your theme is up to date

Older themes miss out on speed improvements that newer versions include. If you're several versions behind, it might be worth updating. Do it in October, though, not December.

    Test on a real phone

Most of your Christmas traffic will be on mobile. Open your store on your own phone, on 4G rather than Wi-Fi, and time how long it takes. Then try your product pages and your cart.

For a second opinion, run your homepage and a product page through Google's free PageSpeed Insights tool. Focus on the mobile score and the suggestions at the top.

    Why this matters now

If you're spending money on ads this Christmas, a slow store wastes every penny of it. Fixing speed is one of the cheapest ways to get more from the traffic you already have.
