The Evolution of SEO: Why Search Isn't Dead. It's Just Changed

    By We Are Chain• May 22, 2025

After 25 years working in marketing, I’ve watched the digital world evolve from dial-up modems and banner ads to AI-driven insights and voice search. If there's one thing I’ve learned, it's this: change is constant, and adaptation is key.

Recently, I have had a lot of clients and colleagues ask: "Is SEO still worth it?" Or worse: "Is search even still a thing?" Let me assure you—it absolutely is. But the way we think about search today is very different to how it was 5, 10, or 20 years ago.

From Meta Tags to Machine Learning: How SEO Has Evolved

In the early days, SEO was all about keyword stuffing, dodgy backlinks, and tweaking meta descriptions to trick the algorithm. It was the wild west. If you had enough keywords on your page, you could outrank pretty much anyone. It didn’t matter whether your content was useful—just that the bots could find it.

Then came Google’s Panda, Penguin, and Hummingbird updates—sounding more like a petting zoo than a tech revolution, but they fundamentally changed the game. Relevance, authority, and user experience became the name of the game. That was the beginning of what I call SEO with substance.

Now, we’re deep in the age of AI-powered search—and this, my friends, is where things get really interesting.

What Are AI Overviews and LLMs (and Why Should You Care?)

You’ve probably noticed that when you Google something nowadays, you’re served a neat little AI-generated answer at the top of the page. This is part of Google’s new AI Overviews, powered by its Gemini (formerly Bard) model.

These overviews aim to answer your question immediately—no clicking required. Great for the user, potentially tough for businesses trying to drive traffic to their sites. But don’t panic.

These tools are powered by LLMs (Large Language Models) like Gemini or OpenAI’s GPT-4—the same tech behind ChatGPT. These models don’t just pull from a webpage; they understand context (or at least try to). That’s why schema markup is more important than ever.

    Why Schema Markup Matters

Think of schema markup as a way to speak directly to AI and search engines. It’s structured data that helps these models understand what your page is really about—whether it’s a product, a recipe, a review, or a service.

As LLMs continue to shape how content is surfaced and presented, schema gives you a better shot at being featured in an AI overview, a knowledge panel, or a rich result.

This isn't just theory—Google itself, and platforms like CMSWire and Search Engine Roundtable, have been shouting about the importance of structured data in an AI-first world.

Watch this excellent video with William Alvarez discussing Structured Data.

    What Are Zero-Click Searches?

A zero-click search is when someone Googles something, gets their answer, and leaves without clicking a single link. This could be a featured snippet, a map result, or—more commonly now—an AI overview.

It’s easy to see this as a threat. But it’s also a chance. If your content gets featured in one of these overviews, that’s a visibility win. You might not get the click, but you’re building trust and authority with your brand front and centre.

The goalpost has moved from just getting clicks to being found wherever users are searching.

Shopify + ChatGPT: Friend or Foe?

Now, let’s tackle a big one: Will Shopify’s partnership with ChatGPT change the game for e-commerce?

Short answer: yes—but in a good way.

The integration of ChatGPT into Shopify’s ecosystem is about making ecommerce smarter. From AI-generated product descriptions to customer service bots and personalised shopping assistance, this partnership is all about reducing friction. This is not just about Chatgp inside of Shopify, it the other way around. When users ask about a product in Chatgpt, the products will be pulled directly from Shopify into gpt results, meaning you won't need to go to Google any longer.

Shopify isn’t getting less useful—it’s getting more powerful. For our clients, this means more tools to drive sales, automate support, and tailor customer experiences. As a certified Shopify Partner, we’re staying on the cutting edge to make sure you get the most out of every innovation.

The Future of SEO: It's Not Dead—Just Decentralised

Search isn’t dead—it’s just not only happening in search engines anymore.

People find you on Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, AI assistants, voice search, review platforms, and chat apps. Your visibility is now spread across an entire ecosystem of digital touchpoints.

That’s why it's more important than ever to have a joined-up marketing and sales strategy. You can’t just rely on one channel.

My Advice? Mix Old-School with New-School

If there's one thing I preach to all our clients, it’s this:

Don’t put all your eggs in one marketing basket.

AI is powerful, but so is a good handshake at a Chamber of Commerce breakfast. So is a personal recommendation from a customer who’s had a brilliant experience with your brand.

Digital marketing works best when it’s supported by real-world action. Go out and network. Be visible. Be active in your community. Then make sure your digital presence backs it up with strong SEO, useful content, email automations, and data-led insight.

At We are Chain, we live this every day—we’re proud members of local chambers, we talk to business owners on the ground, and we bring that real-world understanding into our digital strategy.

Final Thoughts: Stay Curious, Stay Visible

Search has evolved. And yes, it’s more complex now. But it’s also full of opportunity.

With the right blend of human insight and smart tech, you can still stand out. Whether you're selling products on Shopify, generating leads through your website, or just trying to tell your story better, now is the time to be everywhere your audience is looking.

SEO isn’t dead. It’s just grown up.

    Let’s grow with it.
